Redhotpawn.com - Entry 5.17.2007.1

A few year ago a friend designed a correspondence chess site which at the time was one of a kind. He never quite worked out all the bugs, but it's still got a handfull of faithful users. Since then a fully functional site has sprung up that does the same thing. This one, redhotpawn.com, has users hailing from all over the world.

I'm currently playing opponents in England, Scottland, South Africa, Brazil and even someone here in the U.S. named Semper Fi, which is short for Semper Fidelis, or "always faithful", and is the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps. Based on his or her response to the Sicilian (1. e4 c5 2. Bc4) and the anonymity and distance of internet interaction, I'm feeling my oats (like Wilfred Brimley).

Mike And The Green Bicycle - Entry 5.14.2007.1

I got a bike and I love it to death, although my legs and tailbone are still playing hard to to get. Yesterday I installed a computer that tells me how fast I'm going, average speed, trip distance, etc. It uses two magnets (one on the front fork and one on a spoke) and measures the revolutions of the wheel. Install it, tell it the size of the wheel, and make sure the magnets pass within 5 mm of each other, and voila!

I rode it a few miles to my temp assignment today and then afterward over to Hollman's, the greasy spoon/bar where you can get creeped out by a statue of Al Capone (?) and spin a wheel of fortune after your meal. If you win, your meal is free.

A co-worker and I made the trip sur velo [I will occasionally be injecting broken French and somewhat less broken Spanish into this blog.] to the Burnside establishment. He moved to Portland from New York where he had been freelancing in the film and commercial industry. He came because he wanted to spend more time making music, so we had plenty to talk about like the ethics of Oink and some of what we've been listening to. He told me about Cow Punk and a band called The National. I told him about Black Tambourine and Boris because he said he'd been leaning toward shoegazer recently. He has a slot on the Portland Radio Authority.

Between recent conversations, my own digging, and the seminal indie rockers who I've been fortunate enough to glean some recommendations from recently, expect a killer mp3 post soon. Once I find hosting, that is.

Charter Post - Entry 5.10.2007.1

Residually goaded by my own persuasion of a friend, I decided it was time to jump back into blogging.

Last night I convinced Scott Moore that he owed it to the world (or at least me) to have a blog expanding upon his work as reporter and news editor at the weekly Portland Mercury. After I saw his blog, I was finally motivated enough to make my own.

I started blogging about 8 years ago, although when I started we didn't have blogging sites like Blogger and we didn't call it blogging. We called it E/N or web journaling and probably some other things I don't recall. I eventually gave up running my own site and opted for the community-driven Live Journal experience, where I met, provoked, and hopefully amused a lot of interesting people. And yes, blogging has gotten me laid at least once, but that, my friends, was in the days when one could win hearts with a keyboard and blogs were just really long web pages with entries in reverse chronological order. Maybe things haven't changed so much.

Here you'll find me having recently moved to Portland, OR, living in the NE neighborhood of Concordia near the charming avenue they call Alberta St in the house of one Ashod Simonian, musician, production manager, and just recently a published author/photographer.

This blog will contain my own experiences as a musician, aspiring gastronome, and born-again North Westerner. I'm looking forward to writing about my transition from driver to bicyclist, and also I'm going to use this forum to help explore a creative direction I've been fantasying about for some time. That's right -- macaroni and finger paint mixed media.

And of course, just as when I started blogging, I'm going to spend all sorts of time writing about other people's art, especially the work of my friends.
